現今這個社會尚未準備好去接受除了異性戀外的其他性取向，在法律上這些人始終無法得到平等的待遇；在教育裏其他性取向無法在課本上佔有位置，就好像它們是不存在的；在日常生活中被別人知道自己與別人不同的性取向就會被人議論，甚至被安上些不合理的偏見。因此作為一個非異性戀者想要向家人、朋友說明自己的性取向，就有一個特有的名詞ㄧ出櫃。
