The perspective switches between Amy and Charlie Justice, who were in a boarding school at the time of the beginning of the nuclear war. Amy is 16 and in the high school wing, stuck with her classmates in the lower levels. Charlie, the five-year-old is confused with the other elementary school kids about what is happening.
