Bend low! Bend low! Not that low!

His voice hits me like the moon

Pummeling into the ocean

I listen to him

Bend low, bend low, and look beyond the horizon

What do you see? He asks me

His voice cuts through me like a knife slicing through an apple

There’s one! There’s one!

Dehydrated from drinking too much seawater, I start paddling

The sun’s already given me a nasty sunburn

And the burn blinds me

Argh! I missed!

Try again! He shouts

Bend low! Bend low! Not that low!

I listen to him

Bend low, bend low, and look beyond the horizon

What do you see? He asks me

His voice cutting through me like the sharp fangs of a dragon

There’s one! There’s one!

Paddle, paddle, and away I go

Whoosh!

The wave drags me under

My nostrils burn

As the seawater sets up camp in the back of my head

Try again! He shouts

Why should I?

I will never ride the wave

Bend low! Bend low! There you go!

Paddle, paddle

There’s one! There’s one!

A biggy it is, almost as tall as a tsunami

Can I do it?

I’m going insane; my lips are already turning blue from the cold

Paddle, paddle

Bend low, bend low

And the wave’s got me

It tells me to give up

No, not me

It’s like riding a horse

Bend the wave to your will

Or the wave will win

The others watch me, looks of slight jealousy on their faces

But why?

Oh, that’s why

I’m doing it!

The wave has no chance

Mom and Dad cheer from the golden beach

That’s how it’s done!

He meets me on land, his face full of pride

And says
