Chapter 2: The Guests Who Never Left

That night, Navya sat alone in her room.

The hotel looked normal at first. The bed was clean. The lamp glowed softly. Rain tapped against the window.

Yet something felt wrong.

She couldn't forget the guests in the lobby.

The way they had all turned toward her at the same time.

The way they had smiled.

Suddenly—

BARK! BARK! BARK!

The sound came from outside.

Navya jumped from her bed.

"The dogs!" she whispered.

She rushed to the window.

A group of dark figures stood between the trees. They looked like dogs, but the fog made it hard to see them clearly.

The barking grew louder.

Then one of the dogs stared directly at her.

Its eyes seemed to be begging her to follow.

A knock came at her door.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

The barking stopped instantly.

Navya froze.

"Who's there?" she asked.

No answer.

Slowly, she opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

But on the floor lay a small object.

A rusty key.

Navya picked it up.

The number 13 was carved into it.

Just then, she heard two hotel workers talking downstairs.

"Has she heard the dogs?" one whispered.

"Probably."

"What if she finds the note?"

The second worker's face turned pale.

"Then she'll know what happened here."

A cold fear spread through Navya's body.

A note?

What note?

The workers quickly walked away.

Navya looked down at the rusty key in her hand.

Somehow, she knew it was connected to the secret.

And somewhere beneath the hotel, buried in darkness, the truth was waiting to be found.

Outside, deep in the forest, the dogs began barking again. This time, they sounded closer.
