The next morning was no different.

Or so I thought.

Our first class hadn't started yet, so the classroom was louder than usual. Some students were finishing homework. Others were laughing over something that had happened the day before.

I quietly took my seat by the window.

I liked watching people more than talking to them.

That's when something caught my eye.

Narin was sitting a few rows away, absentmindedly spinning a blue pen between his fingers.

It wasn't an expensive pen.

It wasn't special.

But for some reason...

I liked it.

I kept looking at it until I realized I was staring.

Stop looking, Phawin.

I lowered my head and opened my notebook.

A few minutes later, I walked past his desk.

Without thinking, I spoke.

"That's a nice pen."

The words left my mouth so quietly that I almost thought he hadn't heard them.

But he looked up immediately.

He glanced at the pen in his hand.

Then at me.

A smile appeared on his face.

"You like it?"

I nodded.

"It's nice."

Without hesitation, he held it out to me.

"Then it's yours."

I blinked in surprise.

"What?"

"Take it."

"No... it's yours."

"So?"

"I can't."

"You can."

Before I had time to refuse again, he placed the pen into my hand.

For a moment...

Neither of us spoke.

I looked at the pen.

Then at him.

"Thank you," I whispered.

He only smiled.

"It looks better with someone who appreciates it."

The school bell rang.

Everyone hurried back to their seats.

The lesson began, but I barely heard the teacher.

The pen rested quietly on my desk.

I kept wondering...

Why would someone give away something they liked... to a boy they barely knew?

That evening, after dinner, I took the pen out of my school bag again.

I turned it over in my hands.

It wasn't the pen that made me restless.

It was the kindness behind it.

I had done nothing to deserve it.

The more I thought about it...

The more guilty I felt.

The next morning, I arrived at school earlier than usual.

The classroom was almost empty.

I looked around.

No one was watching.

I quietly walked to Narin's desk.

My hands trembled slightly as I unzipped his school bag just enough to slip the pen back inside.

I smiled to myself.

"There..."

Now it belongs where it should.

I returned to my seat before anyone noticed.

To this day...

I don't know whether Narin ever found the pen in his bag.

But years later, whenever I remembered that ordinary blue pen...

I realized it wasn't just a pen.
