CHAPTER 15 — THE UNMAKING PULSE

The climb toward the mountains felt endless.

Her breath tore through her lungs. Her legs burned. Her sphere pulsed violently with every step—gold, blue, red—anchors straining to keep her emotions contained as she pushed herself higher and higher into the dark.

The Veylor hum had faded behind her.

But she knew they weren’t gone.

They were regrouping. Recalibrating. Tracking her field.

She didn’t have long.

The forest thinned as she reached a rocky ridge. The moon hung low, casting silver light across the jagged landscape. Far above, perched on the mountain’s shoulder, she saw it:

The observatory.

A dark silhouette against the sky. Silent. Watching. Waiting.

Her sphere flickered.

She pressed a hand to her chest. “Stay together,” she whispered. “Just a little longer.”

The anchors pulsed faintly.

She climbed.

The wind grew colder. The air thinner. The world quieter. Every sound felt amplified—her footsteps, her breath, her heartbeat. She reached the final slope and pulled herself over the edge.

The observatory loomed before her.

Massive. Abandoned. Cracked along its dome like an old skull.

She stepped toward it.

The moment her foot touched the concrete platform, her sphere convulsed.

A shockwave tore through her chest—silent but brutal, like her emotional field had been punched from the inside.

She staggered. “What—”

Another pulse hit.

Harder.

Her knees buckled.

She collapsed onto the cold concrete, gasping as her sphere shattered into fragments of gold, blue, and red.

“Mara—Draven—someone—” she choked, though she knew neither could hear her.

A third pulse slammed into her.

This one wasn’t hers.

It came from the observatory.

From inside it.

From something waiting there.

A voice—cold, mechanical, emotionless—echoed through her field.

UNMAKING PULSE ACTIVATED.

Her breath froze.

“No,” she whispered. “No, no, no—”

The pulse hit again.

Her anchors flickered violently.

Comfort dimmed. Hope cracked. Anger flared and sputtered.

She felt her emotions draining—pulled out of her like threads unraveling from a tapestry.

Her fear vanished. Her anger vanished. Her hope vanished.

Her sphere dimmed to a faint, dying glow.

She collapsed fully, cheek pressed against the concrete, vision blurring.

“What… is happening…”

The voice echoed again.

UNMAKING PULSE — FIELD TEST IN PROGRESS.

Her stomach twisted.

Veylor wasn’t chasing her.

They were herding her.

Driving her toward this place.

Toward their prototype.

Toward the machine designed to erase emotion.

She tried to push herself up.

Her arms shook. Her fingers trembled. Her breath came shallow and thin.

Her sphere flickered again—barely a spark now.

She felt herself fading.

Not dying.

Unmaking.

Her emotions were being erased.

Her identity. Her memories. Her anchors.

She whispered, “Stop… please…”

The pulse hit again.

Her vision went white.

Her mind went quiet.

Her sphere dimmed to a single point of light.

A tiny spark.

A dying star.

She felt herself slipping into numbness—into emptiness—into the cold, hollow void the machine was designed to create.

Then—

A sound.

Soft. Human. Real.

A child’s voice.

“Don’t go.”

Her eyes snapped open.

A small figure stood at the edge of the platform—a boy, maybe eight years old, pale and trembling, eyes wide with fear.

He looked hollow.

Emotionless.

Unmade.

But he was speaking.

“Don’t go,” he whispered again. “Please.”

Her sphere flickered.

A spark.

A pulse.

A heartbeat.

She reached toward him with shaking fingers. “I… can’t… hold on…”

The boy stepped closer.

His voice cracked. “Help me.”

Her sphere pulsed again—weak, but real.

Her anchors flickered—gold, blue, red—trying to reform.

Comfort. Hope. Anger.

She inhaled sharply.

The Unmaking Pulse hit again.

But this time—

Something inside her resisted.

Something ancient. Something cosmic. Something the universe had grown inside her.

She reached toward the boy.

Her sphere ignited.

A burst of blue light—small, fragile, but alive—shot outward from her chest and touched him.

The boy gasped.

Emotion flooded back into his eyes—fear, confusion, relief.

He whispered, “You’re a Balancekeeper.”

Her sphere blazed.

The Unmaking Pulse faltered.

The observatory trembled.

The machine inside it groaned.

She pushed herself to her knees, breath ragged, sphere burning with new strength.

She whispered, “I’m not done.”

The boy reached for her hand.

And together, they stood.

The Unmaking Pulse roared.

But she roared louder.
