It happened when I was eighteen, when I was still living in Hong Kong with my parents, which is my hometown by the way, We lived in a small house in the countryside. We’d moved there since I was five and I really like that place. Unlike the urban district, the countryside is very quiet. The only sounds you would be hearing were the dogs’ howling at night and birds’ singing in the morning. That used to be a thing I loved since the city was always too noisy and stressful for me.

But that’s why what happened that night became so horrifying.

My parents went on a short trip so I was at home all by myself that evening. Like a lot of people, I don’t really like the concept of being alone during night times. So I would turned on the TV and watched YouTube on my IPad just to kept myself company. I remembered sitting in the living room watching Pewdiepie’s old gaming video which is a horrid game. I was so focused that when my phone made a sound, I literally jump out of my couch out of fear.

Siri: Hello there.

I heavily sign as I relieved. “No Siri no one is talking to you.” I yell at my phone. As I felt so stupid and kind of funny at the same time. I sat back down and kept watching videos until the end of the series. It was already 9 p.m. so I decided to go and took a shower. So I turned off the TV and headed my way to the bathroom. I brought my phone with me so I can played some music while I’m showering. I was humming to myself and enjoying the hot water rushing through my body.

But the music suddenly stopped.

Siri: Hi. What can I do for you?

I was feeling kind of weird at that moment. But I didn't think too much as I thought the lyrics of the song somehow triggered Siri to react to it. So I just simply told Siri to shut up and finished the shower.

As I headed back to my room to change, I realized that I’d forgot to bring back my phone with me. So, after I was dressed, I walked back to the washroom to get it.

And then, I saw Siri popped out once again. It was talking. TO ITSELF.

Siri: Hello there.
Siri: I don’t know how to respond to that.
Siri: I’m here.
Siri: Hello there.

I had to admit, I was totally freaked out at that point. My heart was beating like crazy and I literally froze. The music has been turned off since I finished showering and there should be no sound AT ALL during than. I was so scared but was still able to gain enough courage to grab my phone and texted my boyfriend about it. Unfortunately, he didn’t think it was that much big of a deal and I was just overreacting. Still, as kind as he is, he gave me a call just to comfort me. Also, he told me that I could just turn off Siri if that would make me feel better.

I had calmed down a little bit after the call and decided to take his advice. After that, I watched some funny videos on YouTube in order to make myself felt a little bit more comfortable before I went to sleep. I still had a strange feeling in my stomach while I was lying on my bed. But nothing had really happened since then and I was able to slowly fell asleep.

However, in the middle of the night, I woke up as I heard some strange noises.

This time, Siri wasn’t the only one who can heard those sounds anymore...I heard them too. INSIDE MY HEAD. SCREAMING. LAUGHING. I wanted to escape from it but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t even raise a finger or turn my head. I was frightened to death and the only thing I could do was to close my eyes, hoping it will end soon and I’d still be alive after this.

For god knows how long, I found myself waking up in the sunlight. Not having a single memory on how I fell asleep or how the situation ends. Everything seems completely normal. Is it all just a dream? I had no idea, but it just felt too realistic that I can’t even convinced myself that it was a dream. I check my Siri, it had been turned off the entire time, just like last night. Then I open my Safari to check the search record. There was nothing there. NOTHING AT ALL.

Soon, I heard the front door opening. It was my parents, coming back from their trip. I didn’t tell them any of this because I didn’t want them to worry. Besides, it seems kind of silly to told them I was terrified by my own phone. They would mostly thought that it was the consequences of using too much internet and watching too much horrid games Let’s play. Anyway, whether the incident is true or not, I was just glad that it was over. I guess I just didn’t want to overthink this whole thing and made myself more miserable than I already was.

Two years later I’d moved to Taiwan in order to finish college. I’ve been living by myself ever since. It was a nice little apartment and the soundproofing was great. I still had no idea what the hell happened at that night. But it never happened again and I gradually forgot about it.
