I always got what I wanted and I hated it. My parents were rich, so rich that they didn't care. My mom had her beauty business that was the top of the chain in Russia. She made famous songs from the 2000s and even songs now, making her skyrocket with popularity and tons and tons of money. My dad had a business as well, one that had millions and millions of dollars. My parents seemed to love each other in public, my father’s hand on my mother’s waist, bright smiles and sweet loving kisses for the people, sweet nothings whispered into ears and loving laughs here and there. But once they came back inside it was like they didn't know each other. Their voices were like a harsh tide crashing against rocks, the thunder of lighting, a panel of glass shattering. It never ended. Their arguments lasted days, weeks, months. It grew like mold on wet wood. Until eventually my mother finally snapped. I was sent to a public school in a small town of Montana. Words of a new student from Russia spread like a wildfire in the school. Curious murmurs if I was a boy or a girl, if I was straight or gay, tall or short, strong or weak echoed across the long hallways filled with lockers and classrooms. But when I arrived on October 16th there were mixed looks. Most boys looked disappointed, some asleep while the girls had even more mixed expressions. The popular looking girls were disappointed that they couldn't get a new minion or a hot new boyfriend, and the ‘art freaks’ just glanced at me. They seemed like my friends back in Russia in my private school, but I didn't bother talking to them. I had better things to focus on. But as I glanced towards the back, my eyes locked onto a girl who looked more fucked up than me. “Hello. I’m Irina.” I said in front of the class while still looking at the gorgeous girl. She seemed so sleep deprived, yet so gorgeous at the same time. But I eventually sat down in an empty seat once the teacher let me, getting my notebook and pencil out while listening to the teacher starting the lesson. I always tend to get good grades no matter if I studied or not, so I didn't bother to pay attention. My writing was fantastic anyway. At the end of class I packed up my things and left once we were dismissed, looking at my paper with furrowed brows of pure confusion. I turned and tilted the paper to try and understand where my next class was. Science. Room 602. “Thank you.” I then walked towards the stairs, each step increasing my wonder if the girl with the eyes like coffee was in my class. I turned to the left once upstairs, seeing the window that had an obnoxious amount of projects on it. Models, posters, and diagrams on the window. “Oh, Irana! You sit by Kira in the back.” The teacher said with a smile as sweet as cotton candy on her face. It was so sweet it sickened me. Why was she so happy? Let alone smiling? She said my name wrong but I nodded, moving to the back where the girl was. “Yeah.” I admired as Kyra laughed, the sun highlighting her face perfectly. While part of me wondered why it was so funny to her, I didn't bother bringing it up. I looked towards the teacher who was still getting her own stuff ready, students continuing to talk and laugh about whatever. I looked back towards Kyra, pausing as my gaze lingered longer than it should have as the words I was about to say quickly left, seeing her eyes meet mine once more. I wondered curiously about Kyra, what she was truly like and why she seemed so tired and exhausted. But when we talked it was like she had the whole world in her hands.
